BarryM treasure chest palette

Since trying the BarryM meteor palette, I’ve been really exited to try another palette from them. When they announced their treasure chest palette I was so eager to try it. The shades looked really lovely and there was a really nice mix of different colours. I wasn’t sure how many mattes or shimmers there were so I didn’t know what to expect in that sense.

I Picked it up from Superdrug when they had their 3 for 2 offer on makeup a few weeks ago, and I couldn’t wait to try it. It cost me £12.99 and is also available online & at InTheStyle.com. This palette contains 18 shades, with a mixture of mattes and shimmer shades. The packaging is a plastic case, with a sturdy clasp, and a clear lid, with no mirror. I’m personally not too fussed by a mirror, but I know a lot of people prefer for palettes to have mirrors, for travelling.

The first thing I noticed, was the beautiful duo chrome lilac/fuschia colour in the centre. I’d seen Marc Zapanta use this on the BarryM page and it looked stunning so I knew I had to use that asap. The second thing I noticed is that there really aren’t many matte shadows in this at all. There is a burnt orange, deep purple, vanilla, and taupe shade, and then theres a white with little glitter flakes in it, which was… unusual. And the final colour on the bottom row is more of a shimmer than a matte. There rest of the shades are a mix between foil and glitter formulas.

Having created a few looks using this palette I have a pretty good idea of how the shadows work. I’ve used the burnt orange colour as my transition colour for most of the looks i’ve done and I really like how it blends, and how it can be used really lightly, but the colour can also be built up to be more bold. I use the deep purple to deepen up the crease and outer corner, which works really well. I worry that using a purple and orange together would look weird, but they’ve chosen tones that complement each other quite nicely. The purple blends really nicely too. I’ve used the white colour as a matte cut crease, which was really nice and bright, but the little iridescent flakes that are in it didn’t stick and just floated around the rest of my eye and looked a bit weird. I’m not sure what I think of that yet. I’ll give it another try, but so far it’s just a bit of an odd idea.

I’ve used the bright pink in the centre of the palette, and it’s a really striking, glittery shade, By far my favourite colour in the palette. It applies quite nice, and it’s well pigmented. I’ve also used the lime green, which has a similar formula, and the black, which Is nice to create a little depth in a look, without being too glittery. The black has holographic glitter in it, but I don’t find that they showed up much when I applied it to my lid. I didn’t mind that for the look I was going for, but I’m not sure how I’ll feel about it, If I actually wanted the glitter to show up.

I’ve used the two more gold shadows, which have a foiled formula, which is quickly becoming my favourite shimmer formula.I love the wet look it creates, and how smooth and flawless it’s finish is.These shadows I applied with a brush, and It took about two layers, but I was still pleased with the payoff. It’s one of those shadows that I know would have been automatic pigmentation If I had used my finger to apply it, but I’m always cautious when applying shadows to a cut crease (the stress of cutting the crease is too much, I don’t want to ruin it by smudging the shadow too far with my fat fingers). Looking at the swatches, the other shadows of this formula, are just as creamy, and I can’t wait to use them, especially the brown and red shades.

I do wish this palette had maybe a few more, or different matte shades, but I don’t think there are any of the shimmer shades that I would take out or trade, so really I can’t complain with the shadows in there. I think I’ll get a lot of use out of this palette, especially combining it with other palettes that contain more matte colours.
